Abstract

Abstract: Numismatic evidence collected from the lower extension of Euesperides had suggested that there was a gradual withdrawal from the site to the new location of Berenice. However, a stratified coin from the penultimate phase of occupation in a house on the east side of the Sidi Abeid provides a terminus post quem of 261–258 BC (‘Magas reconciled with Ptolemy II Philadelphus’). This is comparable to other finds on the Sidi Abeid. The absence of Soter/Libya coins suggests that the final phase of Euesperides was short-lived and that the city was abandoned not long after 258 BC. Euesperitans appear in papyri from Egypt dated to the second half of the third century BC. However, the individuals are likely to have been recruited for Ptolemaic forces before the abandonment of Euesperides or the adoption of the new name of Berenice.
