Many individuals experience persistent self-doubt, self-criticism, and a sense of falling short, often driven by deeply ingrained patterns of thinking. This article introduces the ‘Script’ metaphor as a clinically informed, accessible way of conceptualising these internal processes within a cognitive behavioural framework. The Script is used to describe the internalised, habitual narrative shaped by lived experience that influences identity, behaviour, and emotional responses.
Drawing on established CBT theory, including automatic thoughts, core beliefs, and conditional assumptions, the article explores how the Script contributes to difficulties such as imposter syndrome and low self-esteem. It highlights the role of repetition and familiarity in maintaining self-critical thinking patterns, supported by neurobiological perspectives on learning and habit formation.
A brief applied framework is presented in the form of three guiding questions designed to support cognitive restructuring and promote psychological flexibility. The article emphasises that the Script is not a reflection of truth, but a learned pattern that can be recognised and responded to differently over time.
The Script metaphor is proposed as a practical tool for therapists to support clients in externalising self-critical thinking, fostering greater awareness, and enabling more values-consistent action. While not intended as a stand-alone intervention, it offers a clinically relevant addition to existing CBT approaches aimed at improving self-concept and reducing distress.
