As coaches, much of our work revolves around making sense of the complex concerns, dilemmas, and aspirations our clients bring to us. This vital process - whether explored privately, in supervision, or in dialogue with clients - is known as formulation. While coaching models and techniques often take centre stage in coach training programmes, formulation remains an under-explored yet powerful skill. In related professions, it is recognized as a hallmark of expert practice. For coaches working in an increasingly dynamic, complex world, formulation offers a way to respond more creatively, flexibly and effectively to client needs.
