This is a short text responding to Henry Broome's article "Walk and Chew Gum." Broome's piece itself was a response to my previous article, "On Critical Distance" (Art Monthly, June 2021) that questioned many of the claims made by Broome in his article "Critical Distance" (Art Monthly, April).
The four articles by us constitute an ongoing examination on the role of "distance" in art criticism. We both seem to be arguing against the notion of distance, but from very different standpoints.
