Abstract

Respect for the individuality of each child is one that is acknowledged and promoted within the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the Equality Act 2010 and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Consequently, the discussion in this chapter is examined from a broadly human Rights perspective. The latter approach has two significant benefits. First, it allows me to draw attention to the fact that respect for individuality is a legal requirement and thus one that every child; irrespective of their gender, social class, race, disability, religion etc, is legally entitled to. Second, it allows me to highlight the interconnectedness of individuality, diversity and inclusion, and how the provision of an enabling environment is crucial not only for supporting children’s individuality but also for promoting inclusivity.
